Srinagar, Nov 9: Indian Army on Saturday arrested the senior leader of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Sheikh Muhammad Afzal from frontier district of Kupwara.
A JKLF spokesman in a statement here said that police raided his house at Tregham friday morning and whisked him away to an unknown destination. S.M. Afzal who is Senior Vice chairman of JKLF has been campaigning for the boycott of elections in District Kupwara. He made a very resounding speech in Jamia Masjid Trehgam on Friday asking people to boycott the elections.
JKLF Zonal President in Srinagar Ghulam Qadir Rathar while condemning the arrest of S M Afzal said that it is the utter frustration of the authorities. He termed the arrest of S M Afzal undemocratic, unrealistic and against the basic human rights of the people.
Ghulam Qadir Rathar called on the Indian government to immediately release S M Afzal and many other leaders who have been arrested in order to stop the massive public demonstrations and peaceful processions against the election in Kashmir.
The JKLF leader called on the international community the check the excesses that the Indian occupation forces have unleashed on the people of Kashmir over the past month. He reiterated that peaceful struggle for right of self determination will continue despite nefarious and violent methods of suppression by the Indian state against the people of Kashmir.
