  • It devastated an area of more the 30,000 square miles. Cities like Balakot, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and all small villages being razed to the ground. lWhole mountain sides fell into rivers, villages disappeared, all roads were destroyed. Towns in Indian held Kashmir were also affected.

  • Over 79,000 injured in Pakistani side; 4,500 in Indian side.

  • 500,000 people in remote areas were hardly accessible.

Education

  • 10,000 school buildings affected (6300 totally destroyed)

  • 960,000 children need school support

  • School enrollment is expected to fall by about 20,000 with an estimated 11,000 children reportedly injured and 17,000 missing or dead

According to the United Nations, half of the 73,000 people who died in the 8 October quake were children. Some 18,000 of these victims were school pupils, killed as more than 6,000 buildings collapsed on top of them.

Many of the children who survived remain deeply traumatised, with the lack of expert care or counselling available to them after the quake adding to their suffering. Many are still too terrified to go to school, recalling the screams and cries of dying classmates, and others refuse to sleep indoors, despite the chill creeping into the October air as winter approaches.

While the makeshift schools have helped many children resume at least some semblance of normal life, and teachers say the classrooms under canvas helped pupils recover from their fear of entering buildings, there are thousands who still remain out of school.

  • Of the 564 hospitals in the affected area, 291 are destroyed, 74 partially damaged and only 199 are functioning.

  • Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is the most common diagnosis reported.

  • Medecins Sans Frontiers were warning of a potential water-borne disease epidemic.

  • Because of lack of medical treatment, people are dying from treatable illnesses such as malnutrition, pneumonia, diarrhea, tetanus. Without immunizations, children are particularly at risk.
